Overflow above the brew basket is different from a base leak. Once the brewer is stopped and cool, compare the filter setup, coffee dose and grind. Do not stack a paper filter with a permanent filter, and do not try to fix an overflowing basket by forcing the lid shut.

A paper filter sits inside a permanent filter

Use one compatible filter type, correctly seated, as the CFP300 guide specifies.

The filter is folded, torn or grounds sit outside it

Replace or reseat it after cooling, then clean the removable basket using the manual.

Overflow began after finer grinding or a larger dose

Return to the supported medium-grind/dose setup before considering an internal fault.

The basket drains normally but water escapes the base

Stop using this basket-overflow guide. Treat an underside leak as a separate service issue.

Safe checks, in order

  1. Cancel the brew and wait for heat and liquid to settle. Do not lift the basket or pull out the carafe during a hot overflow.
  2. With the unit off, unplugged and cool, inspect the filter and basket for grounds outside the filter, folding or double-filtering.
  3. Reassemble with one correct filter and a dose from the exact model chart. Do not add extra coffee to compensate for a strong or weak taste during this test.
  4. Only if the cause was clearly an external setup issue and no damage or base leak exists, try the corrected ordinary brew while attended. Stop if overflow recurs.

A useful one-variable comparison

Keep brew size and coffee unchanged while correcting filter seating. If the next brew is normal, record the filter problem rather than concluding that the machine needed descaling. If you also change grind and dose, you cannot tell which change mattered.

Decaf and very fine coffee

The CFP300 guide flags grind and dose as relevant to overflow and notes that decaf may need a different scoop amount. Treat the chart as the starting point. Do not use an espresso grind simply because it is available in the cupboard; this is a grounds-brewing basket, not a portafilter.

Stop and obtain help when

Stop if liquid keeps rising, the drain mechanism is damaged, the carafe is cracked, or liquid escapes beneath the housing. Never pry a hot drip-stop mechanism open.

Would a second filter keep grounds out?

It can create a drainage problem. Use the single filter arrangement approved for your model.

Is a clean light proof of why it overflowed?

No. A maintenance prompt and a badly seated filter can exist at the same time. Diagnose the observed location first.
