Weigh dry coffee, not the portafilter.
Example: 2 means a 1:2 mass ratio.
Weigh the beverage after taring the cup.

The arithmetic

Target beverage mass equals dry coffee dose multiplied by your chosen ratio. Actual ratio equals measured beverage mass divided by dry coffee dose. For an illustrative 18 g dose and 1:2 ratio, target yield is 36 g. These numbers describe mass, not beverage volume.

Ratio is not extraction yield

A 1:2 brew ratio is not a laboratory measurement of how much soluble coffee was extracted. The calculator has no dissolved-solids reading, temperature measurement or taste assessment. Do not interpret its output as proof of under-extraction, over-extraction or pump health.

Keep the machine comparison separate

Record the basket, grind setting and shot time alongside the dose and yield. If the machine stops delivering water, leaks or makes an abnormal sound, leave recipe adjustment and follow the fault guide. Never loosen a pressurized portafilter to obtain a missing measurement.
